5A great value and a good performer
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1IULJCW9O59VA The Epson VS220 is a budget priced LCD projector that provides a very good level of performance for its price.

This is a 3-LCD projector. Just a few years ago you'd have paid at least two times as much money to get a projector with similar performance. So right off the bat, this is giving you a lot of bang for the buck.

It's compact, light in weight and has an ease of connectivity that makes it easy to use.

With Inputs galore, you're able to hook up 4 video sources at the same time and easily switch between them with the provided remote or directly from the projector using the control panel on the top of the projector.

Inputs:
HDMI
USB-type A
USB-type B
S-Video
VGA

During my review I had two laptops (one PC, one Mac) hooked up using the VGA and USB port and I also had a GoPro Hero3 Black connected and shooting live video. All three sources were easily projected by the Epson VS220.

Connecting both my PC and Mac were super easy. For the PC, running windows 8, it was a simple matter of connecting the VGA cable to the projector. That's all I had to do. The Projector instantly recognized the PC and connected to it.

Connecting to the Mac was only slightly more involved. As soon as I connected my Mac to the projector using a USB cable (not provided) the Epson projector installs a USB driver to the Mac to enable future plug and play capability. Once the instllation of the driver was completed in about 15 seconds, it was ready to go.

Connecting my GoPro Hero 3 was also ridiculously easy. I simply connected a HDMI cable from the GoPro to the projector, turned on the GoPro and video was sent to the Epson which I could then view on the projector screen.

The Espon VS220 performs pretty well even in fairly bright rooms. Being a SVGA resolution, it's going to have some pixelation which won't make it completely ideal for use as a home theater projector,.,. but it will work and satisfy many people for that use. As a business presentation projector I think it will shine. Although it does not come with a carry bag of any sort, that's easy enough to rectify. It's easy to setup, light to carry and will server that purpose well.

I really like that the projector does not need to cool down by running the fan when you're done. Simply turn it off, pack it up and be gone. The lamp life is rated to up to 5000 hours so it will work for a good long time before needing a replacement lamp.

The fan was noticeable but not what I would call loud by any stretch of the imagination. The internal speaker, as most are, was not very good. Especially in a large room, it will sound quite anemic. If sound is critical, you'd be much better off getting a portable wired or bluetooth speaker of some sort and using your PC to provide the sound to the portable speaker.

Another great feature that is not unique to this projector but appreciated nonetheless is the ability to run slideshows from simply hooking up a USB flash drive to the projector, no PC required.

I like this projector and think its a great buy.

3An easy to use value projector
By THATCH
First off: This is an entry level projector. It has similar specs at about 1/3 the price of a "top of the line" projector I bought from Dell over 5 years ago. Things have come a long way in 5 years as have price reductions! Entry level with entry level price.

I didn't ever need to touch the installation manual.

My first test of the device was hooking it to my 1080i Tivo via HDMI. Of course this projector can't reproduce 1080 directly but it did handle the widescreen signal appropriately and with good color reproduction and without distortion. It gave no fights with receiving a higher resolution than it could produce and down scaling it without any artifacts or distortion.

My second test was by plugging it in to my PC to replace a monitor. It performed better at this task and I could see it realistically being used in an office environment.

Operation was pretty simple, and a positive point is that zoom and keystone have dedicated buttons, so you don't have to trail through on screen menus to get to these features repeatedly. An annoying feature of some other projectors. The remote control looks like something out of the 90's, but it does everything without difficulty and doubles as a presentation remote if you plug a USB cable from the projector to your PC.

A nice feature is that there is no require cool down. This is a BIG thing for office where people often unplug the projector or shut it off without cooling down, ruining the bulb which is usually quite pricey.

All in all a simple projector, lower end specs, good color reproduction & brightness for the money. I'd have no problems recommending this projector for someone who had budget as the first requirement.

4Excellent projector for the price, very bright, great color.
By Bron
Summary: Compact and light weight, this is aimed squarely at the traveling business person who needs to make presentations while traveling, but it is also a great and handy general purpose projector if you can accept a few limitations in exchange for the low price.

Pros: Very compact, low price, excellent image quality, good color, good build quality, easy to use, good remote, USB and HDMI connections, instant on/off.
Cons: Lower (800x600) resolution by today's HD standards (but fine for intended use), remote not backlit. Weak speaker.

The high lumens means this can be used in a room with a fair amount of ambient light. The 800x600 resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio are fine for presenting and also fine for DVD's and many video formats. It's not "HD" but it's higher than standard DVD video (640x480) and fine for streaming videos, DivX, home videos, photos, and similar uses. You get Epson build quality and reliability, long bulb life, good out of the box color, instant on/off, USB instant play (for photos, presentations, and PC Display, but not suitable for video), HDMI for DVD's/Movies and VGA (good for PC Video and general display purposes).

You get auto vertical (but not Horizontal, that's manual via a slider on top front) image adjust and lots of tweaking options (most of which you won't need). This unit is very quick and easy to set-up and use, and quick to shutdown and pack up as well.

Using my laptop everything worked fine and was quick and easy to setup. Projector detected the video signal and the auto config worked as expected. Laptop switched screen resolution to match projector's 800x600 rez (I tried other resolutions as well, all worked fine). I projected an 84" (diagonal) image using ECO mode (lower power/brightness, less noise, longer lamp life) and left the auto iris on (better blacks). I did not need to make any adjustments to color, everything looked good to me.

The image quality is excellent for the price. For business purposes, it's very good. For home media, it's acceptable and, at this price, very decent. The blacks aren't "inky," but the image is bright and colorful. Also a good choice for gaming and you get HDMI for best quality DVD/Movie videos. No USB cable is included, but who doesn't have plenty of these already?

Verdict: The basic idea here was to deliver a good quality, budget projector that features Epson's key image and build quality, and basic features, at the lowest cost possible, I believe Epson has hit the target and that these projectors will be quite popular.

----------------------------------

These notes are from my review of the 210 model which is basically identical in performance overall (but has no HDMI and is a tad less bright). I have used or owned a dozen or so Epson projectors, so am very familiar with their performance characteristics.

Photos and Art images: these looked very good to excellent. Used an 84" image and there was plenty of detail, very bright, fairly sharp, wonderful color fidelity, and overall great image quality. Displayed via laptop using VGA, but you could also use the USB connection for this. I'm just more used to using VGA, so that's my preference.

I did some limited testing to see how this unit would work with streaming video for casual movie watching (e.g. Netflix, Amazon Instant video, etc.).

Image quality was very acceptable. Blacks were decent, things that were black, looked black. This is no match for a good home theatre unit, no inky blacks and "pop" here, but a very decent and eminently watchable image. Would be great for sports, I'm guessing. I watched some Netflix films and they looked very good, DVD quality plus/minus depending on source. The Amazon video I watched (Firefly non-HD) was a bit lower in quality, but still acceptable. Some native video (i.e. playing from laptop hard drive) looked great, again near or at DVD quality, YouTube videos were pixellated due to their low resolution, but the higher rez looked OK. (On an 84" image, you're going to notice blocking and pixellation w/YouTube and other lower quality sources, so keep that in mind.) I used blutooth speakers or headphones for audio - did not bother with projector audio.

All in all, it was fun and I was pretty pleased with the results. I think many would be perfectly happy with this projector for casual movie/video use (just don't compare it to a moderate to high-end HT unit). The wonderful HBE (Human Brain Effect) takes over after awhile and you don't really notice any image quality issues. Perfectly enjoyable and very inexpensive by comparison. Also very easy to set-up and put-away. I projected the image on my light beige wall and even that looked pretty good. The auto iris does click a bit occasionally (as w/most), but you can turn it off if this bothers you. It improves the blacks a little bit, noticeable, but not a dramatic change.

If you don't get too hung up on the lower resolution, moderate screen door effect (never bothers me at all), you'll have a lot of fun. And, at current prices, this is hard to beat in terms of fun/dollars spent.
